My Invitation to You:

As a Synergy Coach my passion is in helping you succeed at what you are passionate about, thus my slogan – Do What You Love, Love What You Do! I’m also interested in helping all of us evolve the spectrum of the ways we go about creating, promoting and engaging our businesses.

I believe that by finding our passion, working together and creating a new way of doing business this will help our clients & customers understand the way we are creating a new world together! By engaging this process we can help each other (both business & clients) create a thriving new economy!

So many of the small business owners I’ve been talking to lately are facing challenges in building their business. Either they are dealing with minimal budgets, lack of experience, more work than they know how to handle, roadblocks on getting things done or they just feel very alone in building their business! Beyond just the basics of doing business I believe the best way to thrive is to get inside our own passion and motivation and send that message out with our words, our marketing, our networking, our service and our collective voice!

With that concept in mind I have created several opportunities to understand and practice this collaborative & passionate co-creation (as well as the basics of growing our businesses). Please see below for several of these upcoming opportunities that I think you might be interested in. In addition, I’m always available to talk with you about how individual or group coaching might support your business so please let me know if you’d like to talk about that!

On March 17 at 9:30am, the Regional Arts & Culture Council will present the State of the Arts Address to the Portland City Council followed by testimony from CAN, Elaine Calder and Roger Hinshaw as well as a few inspiring performances by Poet Kim Stafford, The Flash Choir and Benson High School Student Kiera Brinkley.

Last year, more than 200 arts supporters packed City Hall for this event to show our massive and unwavering support for the City’s annual investment in the arts. And the impact was felt regionwide.

In 2009 the City of Portland passed its arts and culture budget with a 14.7% increase in public funding for the arts bringing its investment to $4.3 million. Metro area residents and visitors experienced the arts and culture more than 2.6 million times through organizations that were funded by RACC. 916,198 of these arts experiences were offered free of charge and more than 175,000 school-aged children were served.

CAN Wants You! …

It’s time to do it again! RSVP now at rsvp@theartscan.org and we’ll see you at Portland City Hall (1221 SW Fourth Avenue, Portland) on March 17th, 9:30-10:30am to show your support for the arts in the Portland Metro Region. Together we will make it clear that the arts are not a luxury, but a necessity that we want and need the City of Portland to continue to fund.

To join our army of volunteers. It could not be easier. Simply sign up for one of our monthly volunteer trainings (look, here’s one now!). And then, sign up to attend your favorite arts event or festival. You’ll hand out buttons and surveys. Enter people to win free arts tickets. And share the news about CAN.

First Thursday at The Armory
April 1st, 4pm

Getting your ideas off the ground in the age of electronica can seem a little bit overwhelming, especially if you consider yourself a technophobe. However, it’s a lot easier than you think. My web design skills grow with a little help from my friends, and lucky for you all, one of such friend is now offering his services to a wider audience to give lip service to, well, your own ideas and dreams. And it goes without saying that healthy expression leads to a healthy community.

Ted Emeric is THE man to go to for a quick and painless way to start up your own webpage. Not only is he personable, but he’s a rather cool dude. We met out at Lovena Farm on a sunny afternoon under a shade tree. He was lying on the ground, grass blades bending underneath, while I began spouting my ideas to him about health care, and how I’d like to see it change for the better using the HeART of Healing bandwagon.

After my little moment of preaching, Ted asked if I had a web presence, and if not, he’d be happy to help promote my ideas to a larger audience because he believed in my heARTful project. Creating a dynamic hub for others to find me would certainly further my mission; I mean, come on, in this day and age, who performs the Johnny Appleseed version out on grass knolls? And those that do… how do they stay connected to their audience?

And it’s really true: If you build it, especially on the internet, people are more likely to find out about you and your ideas.

For me, I wanted to connect people over common causes – better health care and community communication resources. Ted not only understood that I wanted to contribute to society in my own little way, but he helped me organize my thoughts onto pages using succinct descriptions and calendar links.

Heck, he even added the grass growing in my logo for the HeARt of Healing imagery, citing that “if you’re talking grassroots, let grass play with your bunny’s toes.”

Couldn’t agree more. In fact, I find it rather refreshing and healthy for a self-starter (such as Ted) to help other self-starters (such as myself) grow and prosper in our current set of circumstances. Plant the right seed, folks. Figure out what will support your next steps on both a personal and professional level, and if you need a little help from a friend, consider Ted Emeric.

Friday & Saturday ::: November 13-14, 2009 7:30 PM
The Tribal Storytellers Symposium ::: Sunday afternoon, 15 November from 1:30 – 4 PM

Tickets ::: Sliding scale, $5 to $20
Location ::: Lewis and Clark College’s Agnes Flanagan Chapel, 0615 SW Palatine Hill Road, Portland, OR 97219

Winter is storytelling time among American Indian people. In Indian Country, tribal legends and songs are centuries-old traditions that touch our hearts, spirits and minds. In the ‘long ago time,’ tribal stories were passed down and lessons taught to the next generation by story keepers. They contain lessons intended to teach proper behavior without punishment or confrontation. Yesterday’s peoples faced similar choices in their lives as we do in ours today, and they become our ‘blueprints’ for strengthening positive values and making healthy choices in today’s world. We embrace indigenous cultural values of respect, generosity, selflessness, humor and other qualities which have been instilled into us by our family, our community, and our ancestors. This we, in turn, aspire to pass on to tomorrow’s grandchildren.

Due to circumstances in history, some of our relatives have not heard their peoples’ stories. This festival is a place where we can connect with and learn from the wisdom and knowledge of our region’s tellers. It is for this reason that the Northwest Indian Storytellers Association (NISA) was formed in October 2005: To encourage, preserve and strengthen traditional storytelling and oral cultural arts among tribes in Oregon, Washington and Idaho.

We welcome all of the members of our increasingly diverse community to enjoy the richness of this evening’s stories and song at this year’s festival. All of our sessions will be opened in the traditional native way with drummers, song carriers from the region and an invocation by a spiritual elder. Some of the region’s finest storytellers will be joined by guest storytellers from Alaska and North Dakota.

The Northwest Indian Storytellers Association (NISA) was formed in October 2005 to encourage, preserve and strengthen traditional storytelling among tribes in Oregon, Washington and Idaho, and to share tribal oral cultural arts with the entire regional community.

Vincent Wannassay (Cayuse and Cowlitz) elder, storyteller, poet and Elders Advocate

Esther Stutzman (Komemma Kalapuya and Coos) elder, storyteller and educator

Darlene Foster (Warm Springs and Wasco) tribal storyteller and traditional food gatherer

Woodrow Morrison (Haida) traditional storyteller, oral historian and attorney

Ed Edmo (Shoshone-Bannock, Yakama, Nez Perce and French) traditional storyteller

Our Silent Charity Auction will be held during the Friday and Saturday evening festival events for those who want to bid on Pendleton Legendary Design blankets & clothing, Native American arts & crafts, getaways, & other special items. Proceeds will help fund the emerging tribal storyteller trainings being held over the weekend by the Northwest Indian Storytellers Association.

The public is invited to join us as we celebrate the launch of the upcoming new Native American local cable access television project, Discovering Our Story Television Program. This celebration will be:

Date ::: Thursday evening 12 November at 7:30 PM

Location ::: Studio of Portland Community Media (PCM), 2766 NE Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd., Portland, OR (97212)

This project was created because Native Americans and their history have been misinterpreted and misrepresented in the media. Hollywood, including popular Disney films like Pocahontas and Peter Pan, continues to perpetuate false images of Indians as threatening aggressors, alcoholics, dying or ‘vanishing’ Indians, or passive, wise sages. They rarely portray Native Americans as being a part of healthy and resilient multi-generational families. Consequently this has created confusing, negative impressions in the minds of Native children and youth.

Recently, Native American producers and directors are developing films and documentaries that accurately and authentically tell tribal stories and oral histories, helping to strengthen the identity and resiliency of Native peoples and increase pride in their families and rich tribal heritage.

The creators of Discovering Our Story Television Program want Portland’s Native American community to have a similar opportunity. Over 3 years, Wisdom of the Elders, Inc. (WISDOM) and several teams of volunteers will produce 26 1-hour cable television programs at Portland Community Media. Funded by Multnomah County’s Mt. Hood Cable Regulatory Commission, this partnership will provide opportunities for multi-generational Native teams to train as volunteers in videography, post-production editing, digital storytelling and studio production.

Each Discovering Our Story Television Program will feature two program hosts who air two 15- minute video recordings of local and regional elders, storytellers, and cultural leaders, and then lead a discussion with special guests from the native community. Excerpts from tribal storytelling festivals and other celebrations will occasionally be aired. Community members will be invited to phone in to the program during live airings. Programs will also be rebroadcast through 2012 and shared with neighboring cable stations in the region. Viewers can also access this programming from PCM’s and WISDOM’s website. These media series will provide public audiences with unprecedented access to and knowledge of authentic and diverse history and cultural arts of tribes, and strengthen their understanding and appreciation for today’s First Peoples.

Several series of WISDOM’s public radio programs, Wisdom of the Elders Radio, continue to be broadcast nationally on 32 Indian radio stations three times a week and have been broadcast internationally on networks on Turtle Island and in Canada, New Zealand and Australia. It can be accessed at our Wisdom of Healers website at no charge to viewers/listeners along with k-12 curriculum materials which are aligned to Oregon’s educational standards. WISDOM is planning production of series four and five of Wisdom of the Elders Radio Program which will explore environmental science issues among Northwest and Pacific Rim tribes. This radio series will encourage youth to explore science, technology, engineering and math as a career option; and will provide internships in environmental science and other fields of science.

For more info or to volunteer, you can e-mail rosehb@wisdomoftheelders.org or call (503) 517-9759.

Volunteers will have several opportunities to participate in the development of Discovering Our Story Television. They can:

Volunteer on the Programming Review Working Group to view and listen to recordings and offer constructive feedback for the curriculum which is also being used for the radio and television series; 2) receive training scholarships to serve on the post-production or studio crew at Portland Community Media;

Participate as an audience member of the television program;

Become part of the networking team that publicizes the radio program and television series at powwows and other community events; and

Serve on our technology team as we develop a Web 2.0 presence and distribute notices on e-mail list serves, Facebook, and other social media sites.

Featuring the bohemianVagabond Opera spooktacular, which will send shrills tingling down your spine. Vagabond Opera presents the Baba Yaga Ball: The second annual Halloween bash and séance honoring the ancestors. If you haven’t heard, the Vagabond Opera is the BEST EVER modern-day gypsy music/klezmer/cabaret band west of Slovakia (ha!), some would say! What’s more, this particular performance is a part fund raiser for a project that I, along with Archimedes Movement volunteers, have helped to create: The HeART of Healing.

Halloween in a real mortuary? Vagabond Opera will present a night of haunting music, ritual, art and the sincere honoring of those passed in their second annual Halloween bash! Whether you want to dance, party, pray, or channel your ancestors, this night is for you. The night will feature a stunning interactive altar installation dedicated to honoring the dead, an apothecary and museum of weird objects, a divination table and an ancient fire ritual in honor of Baba Yaga, the Slavic Witch!

Part event proceeds will support The HeART of Healing project of the Archimedes Movement, a grassroots effort to spark positive health reform in Oregon and beyond. To learn more visit TheHeARTofHealing.us

So, please, join us if you can. And pass along this invite to friends, family, spirit guides… as you wish.
